Physics, unfortunately (or beautifully perhaps), doesn’t work that way.

I spent last year following the latest physics news through Science Daily, Phys.org, and INSPIRE. As we enter 2026, the landscape is less about breaking new theoretical ground and more about testing and refining the existing physics. From the high-stakes engineering at CERN to the first crewed lunar flights in fifty years, this is the year we stop asking if these things are possible and start measuring exactly how they behave.

Here’s what I’m expecting physics in 2026 to give us across theory, experiment, space, and computation:

My approach will be that of a cautious physicist. I won’t exaggerate what physics itself refuses to promise.

1. CERN: End of an Era, Start of a Transformation

The biggest story in particle physics this year is the conclusion of Run 3 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). After a highly productive extension, the beams are scheduled to power down in early July 2026 for Long Shutdown 3 (LS3).

• The Final Push: Expect a flurry of results as physicists squeeze the last data from Run 3. The focus remains on the Higgs Boson’s self-coupling and “flavor anomalies” that might hint at a fifth fundamental force.

• The Upgrade: Once the magnets go dark, CERN becomes a construction site. Engineers will begin installing powerful niobium-tin (Nb₃Sn) magnets to focus beams for the High-Luminosity era. The machine is slated to wake up again in June 2030 as the HL-LHC.

Expect headlines like:

• CERN Run 3 ends with record-breaking data haul on Higgs interactions.

• A new study on rare decay channels tightens constraints on a hypothetical fifth force.

2. Space Travel: Return to Human-Centric Exploration

Humans are finally returning to deep space for the first time since 1972. This year, the focus shifts from robotic probes to human-rated systems.

NASA’s Artemis II: Humanity’s Deep-Space Return

The most anticipated space event of the year is Artemis II, currently scheduled for no earlier than 5 February 2026.

• The Mission: This isn’t a lunar landing (that’s for 2027), but a 10-day crewed flyby around the Moon.

• The Goal: The crew of four will test the Orion spacecraft’s life-support systems and radiation shielding in a high-orbit “free-return” trajectory. For physicists, the data on deep-space radiation exposure during this transit will be invaluable for planning the eventual journey to Mars.

ISRO’s Gaganyaan: India’s First Giant Leap

2026 is also a “make-or-break” year for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Following the success of Chandrayaan-3, ISRO is pivoting toward human spaceflight with the Gaganyaan G1 mission.

• The G1 Test (March 2026): This is the program’s first uncrewed orbital flight. Instead of a human, the crew module will carry Vyommitra, a humanoid robot designed to simulate human vitals and test the environment of the LVM3-launched capsule.

• The Goal: Validating the Crew Escape System (CES) and re-entry physics. A successful splashdown in the Arabian Sea will prove India’s domestic capability to launch, sustain, and recover humans from orbit, setting the stage for a crewed mission in 2027. It will make India the fourth nation capable of independent human spaceflight.

Expect headlines like:

• Artemis II provides first human-scale data on deep-space radiation in decades.

• Vyommitra logs 100+ hours in orbit: ISRO’s humanoid test paves the way for India’s crewed 2027 launch.

3. Astrophysics: The Year of the Exoplanet Atmosphere

While previous years were about seeing farther, 2026 is about seeing deeper. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is now in its prime “characterization” era, shifting from simple discovery to rigorous chemical characterization.

• Habitability Metrics: We expect definitive data from the TRAPPIST-1 system. 2026 is when we move from “detecting water vapor” to searching for methane and carbon-to-oxygen ratios, testing if these planets are “warm exo-Titans” or bare rocks.

• The Roman Preparation: NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope enters its final integration phase this year. Its Wide Field Instrument, designed to hunt for dark energy, is undergoing extreme thermal testing for a late 2026/early 2027 launch.

4. Quantum Computing: “Logical Qubit” Inflection Point

The “Qubit War” is moving away from raw numbers (how many qubits you have) and toward error correction.

• Logical vs. Physical: Expect the leading labs (IBM, Google, Quantinuum) to demonstrate stable logical qubits—units where multiple physical qubits work together to correct their own errors.

• Quantum Utility: We are firmly in the utility era. Instead of claiming “Supremacy,” researchers are focusing on materials-science simulations that are just beyond the reach of classical supercomputers, such as battery catalyst reactions.

Expect headlines like:

• The Error Rate plummets: Google and IBM demonstrate first ‘Below Threshold’ logical qubits.

5. Fusion Energy: ITER’s Critical Assembly

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France is entering its most delicate assembly phase.

• The Vacuum Vessel: 2026 will see the finalization of the primary vacuum vessel sectors. While “First Plasma” has been delayed toward the 2030s, the completion of the Central Solenoid will be the engineering feat of the year.

• Private Sector Sprints: While the big science of ITER moves slowly, keep an eye on private firms like Commonwealth Fusion Systems. They are aiming for their “SPARC” pilot plant to demonstrate a net energy gain (Q > 1) in a much smaller, high-field tokamak.

Expect headlines like:

6. Multi-Messenger Astronomy: Gravity Meets Light

With better detectors and longer observing runs, the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration is transitioning from observational to an astrophysical phase. Instead of celebrating each detection, the focus is shifting to statistics, population studies, and cosmic demographics.

The massive O4 observing run officially concluded in late 2025, leaving physicists with a catalog of roughly 250 candidate signals.

• The Data Deluge: 2026 is the year of the deep analysis. While the detectors are currently powered down for maintenance and the O5 upgrade phase, the collaboration is releasing the final, cleaned results from O4.

• The Bright Siren Hunt: The holy grail for 2026 is identifying a “bright siren”—a neutron star merger where we can pair the gravitational wave signal with light from a telescope. This provides a direct, independent measurement of the Hubble Constant (H₀), helping to resolve the Hubble Tension that currently splits the physics community.

Expect headlines like:

• Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs): These models have physical laws baked into their code, speeding up complex fluid dynamics and climate simulations by 10,000x.

• Scientific Foundation Models: Just as LLMs changed writing, pre-trained “Science Models” are now standard for scanning LHC collisions and telescope data, identifying rare anomalies that human-coded triggers might miss.

• Optimizing experiments: From tuning detector parameters to choosing which experimental configurations are worth exploring, AI will increasingly guide how experiments are designed and run.

Expect headlines like:

• PINN 2.0: How neural networks are solving the century-old problem of turbulence.

8. Theory: Fewer Grand Dreams, Better Questions

If there’s one defining theoretical trend for 2026, it’s humility. Theoretical physicists are focusing on re-examining assumptions and building “Effective Theories” instead of ultimate ones. The “Theory of Everything” fever has cooled.

• New results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) have thrown a wrench into the idea of the “Cosmological Constant.” We are now exploring the possibility that dark energy isn’t a constant property of space, but something that weakens or evolves over time.

• The “Swampland” program is gaining ground, helping to rule out versions of string theory that look good on paper but can’t physically exist in a universe with gravity.

Grand Unification and Quantum Gravity are far from dead, but they are being approached more honestly.

Expect headlines like:

So what does 2026 mean for physics?

• It will eliminate bad ideas and refine good ones.

From where we stand in early 2026, it’s clear that this year will not be about dramatic paradigm shifts. Instead, it will be about consolidation and precision. The kind that doesn’t make headlines, but slowly reshapes how we understand the universe.

In short:

2026 will be the year of the metrologists.

It's hard to believe it's been a decade already since that groundbreaking first detection kicked off the era of gravitational wave astronomy.

Fast forward to January 14 this year. That day, the two LIGO detectors in the US registered a signal so clean, so loud, and so exquisitely detailed that it sent shockwaves through the astrophysics community. Dubbed GW250114, it is the clearest view we have ever had into the violent heart of a black hole merger. And it brings with it two monumental confirmations: Stephen Hawking’s famous area theorem and the fundamental “Kerr” nature of black holes as predicted by Einstein.

The results of this study were published in a new paper dropped in Physical Review Letters on September 10, 2025. Let's break down why this signal is such a big deal.

Gravitational Waves and Their Detection

First off, a quick refresher on the basics.

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime, predicted by Einstein's general relativity back in 1916.

They're caused by massive objects accelerating, like two black holes spiraling toward each other at insane speeds. When they finally smash together, they send out these waves, which stretch and squeeze space itself. Detecting them is no small feat—it's like hearing a whisper from across the universe:

That's where LIGO comes in: the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, a pair of massive detectors in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana (with partners like Virgo in Italy and KAGRA in Japan). Each arm is 4 kilometers long, and they utilize the setup of a Michelson Interferometer, using lasers to measure tiny changes in distance. We're talking smaller than the width of a proton.

What happened - The Event

Picture two black holes of masses about 33.6 and 32.2 times the sun's mass, orbiting each other faster and faster. This is called the “inspiral” phase. They're spinning slowly—with dimensionless spins (χ, a measure of how fast they're rotating relative to their maximum) less than 0.26—and the orbit is nearly circular, with eccentricity (how oval-shaped it is) under 0.03.

As they merge (in the “merger” phase), they form a single black hole with a mass of 62.7 M⊙ and a spin of 0.68. In the process, they release energy equivalent to about 3 solar masses in gravitational waves—that's enough to outshine every star in the observable universe for a split second.

The entire event occurred 1.3 billion light-years away, meaning we're seeing (or rather, hearing) an echo from when life on Earth was just beginning to become multicellular.

The Cleanest Signal in History

GW250114 was picked up on January 14, 2025, at 08:22:03 UTC, by LIGO Hanford & Livingston (Virgo & KAGRA were offline for this event), right when they were humming at near-peak sensitivity.

The "loudness" of a signal is measured by its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)—that's basically how clear the signal is above the background noise.

Unlike the first detection a decade ago, which had an SNR of 26, this one clocked in at a whopping 80. That's the highest ever, beating out GW230814's 42 from a couple of years back. The individual detectors nailed it too: 53 at Hanford and 60 at Livingston. Why so loud? This is because, a decade on, the LIGO detectors are now operating near their design sensitivity, equipped with incredible advancements like "frequency-dependent squeezing" – a quantum trick for noise reduction that effectively quiets the noise at specific frequencies, making the signal pop like never before.

The Aftermath: Ringing Down the Cosmos

When black holes collide, they don’t go “splat” like mud. At this point, the event has entered its “ring down” phase. The remnant single black hole is born wildly misshapen and must settle down into a stable, smooth sphere (well, a spinning spheroid, but let’s not get too technical). It does this by vibrating, ringing like a bell struck by a hammer, sending out gravitational waves in specific tones before falling silent and settling into a stable Kerr state.

These tones are called quasinormal modes: damped sinusoids (wavy signals that fade over time) with specific frequencies and decay rates predicted by the Kerr model. Each black hole’s final mass and spin determine its unique set of frequencies, just like the size and material of a bell determine its sound. This is known as the Kerr spectrum, named after the mathematician Roy Kerr, who found the solution to Einstein’s equations describing rotating black holes.

The Kerr metric says a black hole is defined by just three things: mass, spin, and charge (but astrophysical ones are basically neutral, so charge is zero). That’s the no-hair theorem. It suggests that black holes are simple; beyond their mass and spin, they have no other distinguishing features—no “hair.”

The main tone is the fundamental mode (think of it as the bell's primary note). But there are also overtones—higher-frequency, shorter-lived notes that die away much more quickly. Catching these overtones is incredibly difficult because they are faint and get lost in the noise.

The analysis of GW250114’s "ringdown" phase did something spectacular. By carefully analyzing the data starting just 6 milliseconds after the merger's peak, i.e., after the peak strain, scientists confidently identified not just the fundamental tone, but also the first overtone at a credibility level of 4.1 sigma (meaning a 99.99% chance it's real). The fundamental mode's frequency was about 247 Hz, with a decay rate of 221 Hz; the overtone was 249 Hz, decaying with a rate of 708 Hz.

This is black hole spectroscopy—measuring the notes of the ringing black hole to identify it. The frequencies of these two modes matched the predictions of the Kerr spectrum for a black hole of a specific mass and spin. Any significant deviation could have hinted at new physics or a violation of general relativity.

To test if it's truly Kerr, they allowed for deviations in the overtone's frequency and found it's consistent within ±30%. No weird extras; it's pure Kerr. As Maximiliano Isi from the Flatiron Institute put it in one of the news pieces,

Hawking's Area Law: The Universe's One-Way Street

Now for Hawking's part. In the early 1970s, Stephen Hawking proposed a theorem that states that

The total event horizon area of a black hole can never decrease—it can only stay the same or get bigger.

Testing this isn't straightforward because you can't directly measure areas; you infer them using the Kerr formula:

for a black hole of mass m and spin χ.

A black hole merger is the ultimate test. You start with two black holes, each with its own horizon area. You end with one bigger black hole. Is its area larger than the sum of the two original areas?

The team tested this by performing a clever, almost surgical analysis. They split the signal into two:

1. The Inspiral: They used the early part of the signal (the spiraling dance) to calculate the masses and spins of the initial two black holes, and from that, their total horizon area. Crucially, they cut the data before the merger became too violent.

2. The Ringdown: They used the latter, ringing part of the signal to calculate the mass and spin of the final black hole, and thus its area.

By discarding the messy, complex merger data in the middle, they created a pristine test. Any violation of the area law would have to happen during that excluded, highly dynamical phase.

The result was unequivocal. No matter where they cut the pre-merger data—even when excluding the five loudest cycles of the signal—the final area was always larger than the initial sum. For their preferred analysis, the confidence level was a whopping 4.4 sigma (about 99.999% confidence).

Initial combined area: ~ 240,000 km²
Final Area: ~ 400,000 km²
i.e., the area increased. Hawking was right.

As Kip Thorne, Nobel laureate and LIGO co-founder, told MIT News,

What It Means Going Forward

This isn't just a victory lap for a famous theory. It tests the very foundations of our physics:

• It assumes general relativity holds in strong fields.

• It assumes the objects are true black holes governed by the Kerr metric, not some exotic alternative.

• It assumes that the null energy condition (a fundamental principle governing the behavior of matter and energy) is not violated.

GW250114 provides strong evidence that, in this system at least, the universe is playing by these rules.

July 2025 began with an incredible discovery when astronomers detected the third such interstellar traveler ever found: 3I/ATLAS. Its discovery has reignited excitement across the astronomical community, revealing a profound story about cosmic wanderers, the birth of stars, and the shared history of the galaxy.

What makes 3I/ATLAS special? Why does it matter? What can it teach us about our place in the cosmos?

Note: This article is about a relatively new discovery. The comet is being closely monitored at the moment. The given numerical values of various parameters might not be exact and are expected to improve in the future.

☄️ What Is 3I/ATLAS?

Discovered on July 1, 2025, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Chile, 3I/ATLAS immediately stood out because of its unusual, hyperbolic orbit. In astronomy, "I" stands for "interstellar," and this is only the third object ever confirmed to come from outside our solar system, after:

• 1I/ʻOumuamua (2017): The mysterious, elongated object that puzzled astronomers with its strange acceleration and shape.

• 2I/Borisov (2019): A comet-like object rich in gas and dust, behaving much more like typical solar system comets.

Characteristics:

Diameter: 15 km (uncertainty is significantly large, it might be 20 km wide)

Velocity: 61 km/s (will reach a maximum of 68 km/s at its perihelion)

🌠 A Journey from the Stars

Unlike comets born in the icy outskirts of our own solar system, interstellar objects are cosmic refugees. They formed around distant stars, only to be ejected by gravitational interactions, perhaps with giant planets or passing stars.

For untold millions of years, they drift in interstellar space, carrying clues about the chemistry and physics of other planetary systems.

3I/ATLAS’s hyperbolic orbit means it isn’t bound to the Sun. It’s just passing through, coming in from deep space, swinging around the Sun, and heading back out, never to return.

🔭 Why Astronomers Are Excited?

Interstellar objects are natural space probes, samples of material from other solar systems delivered straight to our cosmic doorstep. Studying them can:

• Reveal how planets form elsewhere.

• Show if chemical building blocks of life are common across the galaxy.

• Test whether our solar system is unique or just one of countless planetary families.

With only two previous interstellar visitors known, each new discovery is a chance to gather more data and refine our theories.

📅 What Happens Next

• September 2025: Astronomers will track 3I/ATLAS as it approaches the Sun, carefully measuring its brightness, composition, and orbit.

• Late October 2025: It will swing just inside Mars’ orbit, still far from Earth, so it poses no danger.

• November–December 2025: It will pass behind the Sun from our perspective, temporarily disappearing from view.

• December 2025 onward: 3I/ATLAS re-emerges into the morning sky, fainter and on its way back to the galaxy.

Although it may not be visible to the naked eye, powerful telescopes worldwide are already planning detailed observations.

🔬 Breaking Down the Science

Interstellar object: An object whose path shows it isn’t gravitationally bound to the Sun, it comes from outside the solar system.

Hyperbolic orbit: A path shaped like an open curve, meaning the object passes by once and escapes forever.

Astronomical Unit (AU): The average distance from Earth to the Sun, about 150 million km.

Comet nucleus: The solid, central part of a comet, made mostly of rock and ice.

Outgassing: When a comet heats up near the Sun, it releases gas and dust that form a visible coma and tail.

🌌 What We've Learned from Its Predecessors

• ʻOumuamua: Its bizarre shape and unexplained acceleration sparked debates—was it icy, metallic, or something stranger?

• 2I/Borisov: Much more familiar—a comet rich in carbon monoxide (CO), amines (R-NH₂), and water (H₂O), hinting that other planetary systems form similar icy bodies.

With 3I/ATLAS, astronomers hope to see whether it resembles Borisov (a typical comet) or has its own surprises in store.

🔮 Looking to the Future

Astronomers will use every tool, optical telescopes, spectroscopes, and maybe even radio observations, to learn as much as possible before 3I/ATLAS vanishes into the dark.

These messengers tell a story billions of years in the making, linking us to stars and planets light-years away. Sometimes, the universe can come knocking at our door.

For centuries, scientists thought they fully understood how objects emit heat as infrared radiation. But a fascinating breakthrough in physics is now challenging those traditional limits.

A Breakthrough Has Been Achieved…

A week ago, a new paper was published in Physics Review Letters, titled Observation of Strong Nonreciprocal Thermal Emission written by Zhenong Zhang, Alireza Kalantari Dehaghi, Pramit Ghosh, and Linxiao Zhu, all researchers at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University.

They have designed a metamaterial that emits more infrared light than it absorbs, seemingly a violation of the well-established Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation. Let’s dive into the physics first.

The Physics

Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation

In the 19th century, physicist Gustav Kirchhoff formulated a principle:

At thermal equilibrium, an object’s emissivity (how efficiently it emits radiation) equals its absorptivity (how efficiently it absorbs radiation) at each wavelength.

This law has guided scientists for over 150 years. But it also seemed to impose a natural limit: you couldn’t design a material that emits more infrared radiation than it absorbs under the same conditions.

Reciprocity

The rate of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a body at a given frequency is proportional to the rate at which the body absorbs radiation at that frequency, a property known as reciprocity. Thus, a surface that absorbs more red light thermally radiates more red light.

Metamaterial

Remember I mentioned them in 3 ways to become invisible?

A metamaterial is any artificially engineered material with unconventional properties not found in nature.

The natural properties of a material are deliberately and consciously altered by introducing tiny implants into a substrate. This exploitation of the properties causes metamaterials to interact with electromagnetic radiation in unnatural ways.

Past Attempts

For many years, researchers have been designing methods that could allow materials to break reciprocity.

In 2023, researchers at the California Institute of Technology successfully achieved nonreciprocity. They took a layer of the magneto-optical material indium arsenide (InAs) and subjected it to a powerful magnetic field of about 1 T. However, the effects observed were weak and highly conditional.

A magneto-optical material is a special type of material whose optical properties—such as absorption, reflection, transmission and polarization—can be changed or controlled by applying a magnetic field.

A New Approach

In the new multilayered design, Zhenong Zhang and his colleagues succeeded in doubling the nonreciprocity effects. Their accomplishment is being considered the first reported observation of "strong" nonreciprocal thermal emission.

Their metamaterial consists of five layers of electron-doped indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), each 440 nm thick.

Doping is a process in which a small number of foreign atoms (called dopants) are intentionally added to a pure material (usually a semiconductor like silicon, germanium, or compounds like indium arsenide) to change its electrical, optical, or magnetic properties.

The doping concentration increased as the depth increased. The InGaAs layers were then transferred to a silicon substrate.

A substrate is basically the base material or surface on which other materials, structures, or layers are built or deposited.

The sample was then heated to 540 Kelvin temperature and kept in a magnetic field of magnitude 5 T. This configuration was studied with a custom-designed angle-resolved magnetic thermal emission spectroscopy (ARMTES) set up.

ARMTES is an experimental technique scientists use to study dependance of the emission of thermal radiation by a material in the presence of magnetic field.

The nonreciprocity of the material was measured over a wide range of angles and a broad range of infrared wavelengths (13-23 microns). The system exhibited twice the effect previously reported.

What happens inside?

But how was the material able to bend reciprocity to such a great effect? The secret lies in the engineering of their metamaterial. They did this by:

1. Designing nano-scale resonators in the metamaterial that couple thermal vibrations (phonons) with electromagnetic modes more effectively.

2. Breaking certain symmetries in the structure to create asymmetric emission (more in one direction than the opposite).

3. Exploiting non-equilibrium conditions, so the system locally emits more strongly than its equilibrium absorptivity would suggest.

This doesn’t violate Kirchhoff’s law in its strictest form (which assumes complete thermal equilibrium and reciprocity), but it goes beyond traditional expectations by carefully engineering how energy is redistributed and radiated in practice.

Final Words…

The emission and absorption properties of materials are vital to numerous scientific and engineering applications. If we can control such characteristics of a material, we can create advances in solar energy harvesting, thermal cloaking devices, and other technologies.

For example, such a nonreciprocal thermal emitter can be placed above a solar thermophotovoltaic cell. This would channelize the thermal radiation in one preferential direction and help harvest more of the sun's energy.

According to researchers, progress in this field may lead to breakthroughs in new classes of thermal diodes and transistors, improved thermophotovoltaic designs, and other heat-management technologies.
